International Students have to deal daily with a lot of pressures at school ranging from peer pressure, technology, finance, and lots more. We at TGM Education are aware that these factors are always going to be around. However, we also believe that if we can identify 3 top distractions you might face as an international student; it will help you in avoiding them.
- TECHNOLOGY
According to Insidehighered.com, a recent survey found the use of technology in class, such as laptops or phones for non-educational purposes was distracting to almost half of students. In addition to this, others surveyed believe technology in the classroom is unavoidable. While the last sentence comes off as true, the use of technology could be controlled while in the classroom. Avoid the use of social media and other distractions on the internet during your class hours. Actually, try putting your mobile devices on Silent if you can’t find the nerve to turn it off completely.
2. FRIENDS
We all know the saying that no man is an island; while this is very true, you also do not want to be caught in the web of confused people in the name of “Friends”. As an international student, your friends will always have great influence on your personality and even character. Avoid friends who do not share the same goal and visions as you do. Do not forget, to afford an International Education is not a very easy thing to do and as an International Student, you do not want to spend a lot of cash on repeating classes and sessions.
3. BAD TIME MANAGEMENT
This will come as a major contribution to why some International Students do very poorly regardless of taking care of the two afore mentioned points. Travelling abroad to study can be exciting but also comes with the challenge of you adapting to a new culture, new environments and even new teaching practices/styles. With this challenge comes a very important factor – Time Management.
Students have to figure out the time they need to complete coursework’s and assignments, studying against examinations, calling home to speak with family and friends, bonding with the new found friends in and off campus and so much more. If such a student has a poor time management system, it will be difficult to complete tasks at good times which will result in overlapping of things that should have been completed and done with.
These 3 major distractions can overwhelm international students thereby making their study abroad more of a stressful trip than one to learn on and enjoy. As an international student, it is very important that you work towards making the best out of your study experience.
